101 Teacher Training - Week 1

Welcome to the Takeda Technique Teacher Training. I’m so excited to have you here. During our eight weeks together, you will have the opportunity to watch two classes go through Self-Tape 101. The first class actually happened in October 2021. That’s going to be our focus for February.

When we meet each week, our online session will be divided into three sections: ONE – an overall topic (ranging from an overview in week one to basic theory, to money, and then a final overview), TWO – why I’ve structured that week’s class a certain way, and THREE – we will discuss your student evaluation and what I look for in each week of evaluations including tips on what to look/listen for.

Like all of the previous classes, you will have homework. What’s different is you are not doing a self-tape on your own. Instead you will review the Self-Tape 101 homework for each week (you don’t need to do it), you will look at the submitted self-tapes, and you will give them a color-evaluation (green-yellow-red) and a written evaluation, with the goal that you are guiding them toward improvement. After that, you will watch the October Zoom class. Then, we will meet live on Zoom to discuss.

Unlike in previous classes, I have no surprises in store for you. (So don’t look for them.) I want you to be learning so after eight weeks, you should be able to look at any self-tape and break down how they did it, and how they can improve. I am also giving you the answers (my evaluations) before you start. Some of you may learn best by seeing the goal and figuring out how to get there by working backwards. Others may want to do an evaluation, see what I did, adjust, and then do another evaluation. Or you also may want to just dive in and ignore the answers until the end. I’m happy however you learn. My goal is to get you to a place where you can help every actor improve their self-tapes so they can book.

Any questions? If so email me at scott@talktothecamera.com or call me at 310-499-8037. Let’s get started on your homework.

Click on this LINK to see the Self-Tape 101 homework page. Review the stuff so you’re familiar, but don’t tape the scene.

  1. Click on this LINK to see the self tapes from the five October 101 students. Each week I’m also adding an X-Factor: three or four students additional students from other self-tape classes who submitted tapes.

  2. In that link is a blank MS-Excel spreadsheet to do a colored evaluation (green-yellow-red) and a blank MS-Word document for you to give them a written evaluation.

  3. In that link are also the completed Excel and Word evaluations that I did. (These are your cheat-sheets. Feel free to use them if it helps you learn.)

  4. Evaluate their performance, using the blank Excel and Word documents.

  5. Click on this LINK to watch Week 1 of the October 2021 Zoom workshop. I always sign on early (camera and mic off), to see which students arrive early and to see how the class interacts. (Yes, I’m eavesdropping.)

  6. Email me your evaluations a scott@talktothecamera.com by 6pm (LA time) two days before class.

Wait! There’s more! While I won’t necessarily have you watch a TON of additional homework, I do have one video for week 1.

Please watch this 16-minute video. It’s the Pre-101 video that I’ve created for actors who either don’t have the time for the 101 or are unsure if the Takeda Technique is worth the investment. It’s ultimately designed to recruit actors to the 101, however it has some good fundamental theory that we’ll dig into in week 2.
